Acne Treatment
Acne occurs when a pore in the skin becomes clogged with dead skin cells. When the body produces excess oil (sebum), the oil causes the dead skin cells to cohere and become trapped in the pore. When bacteria that normally live on the skin get inside the clogged pore, they multiply quickly, resulting in inflammation and redness. The deeper the inflammation goes, the more likely an acne eruption is to appear. Skin care doctors can successfully treat acne topically, orally or with several possible dermatologic procedures. Trust us with your acne treatment at our Valrico office. Learn more about acne here.
Hair and Scalp Disorders
Hair disorders are much more common than most people think. They can be uncomfortable, both physically and psychologically, since hair is a major component in how we evaluate our appearance. Even though hair-thinning and baldness is expected in men, it is also quite common in women; both genders may seek help for this condition. While some hair problems, such as mild dandruff, may respond well to over-the-counter shampoos, it is usually necessary to consult with a well-trained medical dermatologist when seeking help for more serious hair disorders, such as alopecia, scalp psoriasis, and pseudofolliculitis (“razor bumps”) — a condition that mostly affects African-American men.
Ethnic Skin Concerns
In addition to pseudofolliculitis, there are several skin & hair conditions, primarily pigmentation disorders, that may be more noticeable and troubling to specific ethnic groups. Unique Dermatology & Wellness Center specializes in treating these problematic skin & hair conditions, which include melasma, keloids, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, pseudofolliculitis, hair loss, and dermatosis papulosa nigrans (small facial/neck moles). Unique Dermatology & Wellness Center has many effective options for treating these disorders. She is highly experienced in the treatment of ethnic skin concerns of African-American, Asian, Indian and Hispanic skin.
Nail Disorders
Some nail difficulties, such as nails that are brittle or ridged, are simply the result of aging. The most commonly treated nail disorder treated by a dermatologist is onychomycosis ( nail fungus) . Nail fungus is difficult to treat and tends to recur. Although some patients get relief from over-the counter medications, patients usually find it necessary to have the condition treated by a medical dermatologist. Treatment options include prescribed topical or oral antifungal medications and laser therapy. In some cases, the dermatologist may recommend the removal of a severely affected nail.
Psoriasis
Psoriasis is a common and often distressing skin condition that causes skin cells to build up rapidly on the skin’s surface. The excess skin cells form thick scales and itchy, dry, red patches that may bleed and/or be painful. Unfortunately, though psoriasis may only flare up periodically, it is a chronic disease. The most commonly seen type of psoriasis is plaque psoriasis. This condition may also affect the nails, scalp and even the joints (psoriatic arthritis) in its various forms.
Rashes
Rashes are extremely common and may result from diseases or localized infections (such as measles or impetigo), constant irritation, allergies to foods, plants, medications or insect bites. Numerous treatments are available depending on the cause of the particular rash. This is why it is important to be evaluated by a skin care specialist if you have a rash that persists. Rosacea
Rosacea is a common skin condition most often found in individuals who have fair skin. It can cause redness, flushing, visible blood vessels and in more severe cases, acne-like breakouts and eye involvement. Rosacea can be treated with sunscreen to prevent flare-ups, topical medications, antibiotics, and laser treatments.
Skin Cancer
Skin Cancer can affect individuals with any skin tone. Though the disease is more common in people with light skin and a history of excessive sun exposure, it is extremely important that people of color also have routine screenings for skin cancer since they can develop the disease in uncommon locations such as the scalp, palms, feet and nails. There are three types of skin cancer: Basal Cell Carcinoma, Squamous Cell Carcinoma, and Melanoma. All have to be treated, but Basal Cell Carcinoma is the least serious, having a very low risk of metastasis. Squamous Cell Carcinoma carries more risk of metastasis and Melanoma is the most dangerous of the three. Skin cancers may be treated in a number of ways, but are typically treated by excisional surgery or Mohs micrographic surgery. Any suspicious lesion, or an existing mole that changes shape, size, texture or color, should be immediately examined and diagnosed by a professional dermatologist. Learn more about skin cancer here.
Warts
Warts are benign skin growths caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). The virus infects the top layer of skin. Skin that has been damaged is more likely to be infected. While in some cases warts just disappear on their own, especially in children, but for many, dermatologists can remove warts with topical medication, cryotherapy or electrosurgery and curettage.
